About
From a grow room to a field guide
Ohio Gourmet Mushrooms started as our own small grow operation. We aren't growing for sale right now, so this site does a different job: it's an organized, careful guide to the gourmet and medicinal mushrooms grown in the United States, and to the people you can buy them from.
Ohio is home, so it gets the deepest coverage first. The directory is national, though, with a page for every state, and we're filling it in as we confirm growers.
How the directory works
- Every listing comes from a public page. A grower's own website, a state or local food directory, a farmers market vendor list, a certification listing or local press. Each listing shows the page we used and the date we checked it.
- We don't invent details. If a source doesn't say whether a farm ships or sells to restaurants, the listing says "Not stated."
- Growers can submit their own listing. Submissions go into a private queue and appear only after we review them.
- Nobody pays to be listed, and there are no affiliate links on this site.
How we handle health claims
Medicinal mushrooms attract a lot of marketing. We describe what traditional practice claims and what published research found, in plain terms, with citations to sources such as the National Institutes of Health, PubMed and university extension services. We say when a study is small, when it tested an extract rather than food, and when the evidence is weak.
We never present a mushroom as a cure, and we don't give dosing advice. Nothing on this site is medical advice. If you're considering any mushroom supplement, talk with a clinician first, especially if you're pregnant, take prescription drugs or are being treated for cancer.
On foraging
We don't publish identification guides. Buy from a grower, and do not eat wild mushrooms you cannot identify with certainty.
Corrections
If a listing is out of date or something on a guide page is wrong, growers can send an updated listing. We'd rather fix a mistake than leave it up.
